War is cheap when you don’t pay for it at the pump.
The agitators have armies. The “neutral” ones have cheaper fuel. The people face $2.38/litre diesel. Look at what the data actually says when you read it geopolitically:
🇩🇪 Germany pays $2.31 for petrol — the country that declared sanctions the loudest, lost Russian pipeline gas, and is now watching its industrial base hollow out. BASF didn’t leave because of bad weather.
🇬🇧 UK pays $2.38 for diesel — the government that cheered earliest and hardest is the one whose delivery drivers, nurses, and single mothers are paying the highest pump price on this entire chart.
🇺🇸 USA pays $0.91 for petrol — the architect of the strategic posture, the arms supplier, and the setter of terms pays less than half of what its closest allies pay. Dollar dominance and domestic shale are a remarkable geopolitical insulator.
🇮🇳 India was lectured about being on the “wrong side of history” for staying non-aligned and buying discounted crude. It pays $1.08 for petrol. The sermon came from capitals paying $2.30+.
🇨🇳 China stayed quiet, diversified its imports, and absorbed every accusation of fence-sitting. It pays $1.10 for petrol. Fence-sitting, it turns out, has a very reasonable price per litre.
The pattern is not subtle.
The loudest voices bear the highest pump prices. The silent ones bear the lowest. And no one at the decision-making table — not one — queues at a petrol station wondering if they can afford the school run this week.
The chart is clean. The politics behind it are not.
A note on historical context
European fuel taxes have been significantly higher than US levels for decades — long before any recent geopolitical event. The energy crisis did not create this gap. It widened it — and then locked it in. The pump prices shown are real. Their roots are structural. Their acceleration is political.
The most vulnerable economy on this chart is not the most expensive one.
India sits quietly at $1.08/litre. That looks almost reasonable on a global comparison chart. It is not.
One litre of petrol in India consumes approximately 18% of a daily minimum wage. The same litre costs a US worker under 1% of theirs. Germany’s daily-wage worker, paying $2.31, is still absorbing a smaller share of their income at the pump than the Indian worker paying $1.08.
India’s GDP rank is 5th in the world. Its per-capita reality is 142nd. The chart shows a country that looks great on the global list — but behind that number is an economy where a single-rupee increase at the pump triggers cascading inflation across food, transport, freight, and daily wages simultaneously. No other economy on this chart carries that fragility at that scale.
The highest pump price is Germany’s burden. The highest pump vulnerability is India’s — and it is not even close.
